<p><strong>Data Filters</strong> screen let you add both <strong>Include</strong> and <strong>Exclude</strong> filters to place limits on your search results. They allow you to partition your index and focus the search on material that is relevant to a specific audience.</p>

<li><strong>Include</strong> patterns require a result item to match a field value to be displayed to the search user.
<ul class="wp-block-list">

<li>Multiple <strong>Include</strong> entries are ANDed. For a result item to be displayed to the search user, it must match at least one value from each entry.</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Exclude</strong> filters suppress search items that match a specific field and value. Multiple exclude filters are ORed. Any entry that matches excludes the result item from view.</li>

<p>The filters do not support regex or wildcard matching. </p>

<p>It is not possible to include and exclude the same field. A maximum of 20 Include and Exclude entries can be added. (An include pattern with multiple ORd values still counts as only one of the 20.)</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rules">Rules</h1>

<p><strong>Site Search &gt; Configurations &gt; Advanced Configurations &gt; Rules</strong></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<div class="alert alert-info">
<h2>Precedence of Features</h2>
<p>A Search Profile applies
<a href="/docs/searchstudio/searchstax-studio-global-filters/"</a>Data Filters</a>
first, then
<a href="/docs/searchstudio/searchstax-studio-ranking-tab/">Ranking</a>,
Rules,
<a href="/docs/searchstudio/searchstax-studio-ranking-tab/">Smart Ranking</a>,
and finally
<a href="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/searchstudio/searchstax-studio-promotions-tab/">Promotions</a>. </p>
</div>

<p>Rules are if-then tools that have both <em>conditions</em> and <em>actions</em>. They let us modify the search results based on a &#8220;trigger.&#8221; The Rules Tab of the SearchStax Site Search solution’s <a href="/docs/searchstudio/searchstax-studio-relevance-model/">Model Details</a> screen lets us create rules to boost relevance scores in certain specific circumstances.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="911" height="438" src="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/image-157.png" alt="" class="wp-image-21545" srcset="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/image-157.png 911w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/image-157-300x144.png 300w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/image-157-768x369.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 911px) 100vw, 911px" /></figure>

<p>In this case, the trigger is a word, &#8220;overview,&#8221; found in the query. You can specify whether the query merely <em>contains</em> the trigger, or whether the query must <em>exactly match</em> the trigger phrase.  </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="906" height="610" src="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/image-158.png" alt="" class="wp-image-21546" srcset="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/image-158.png 906w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/image-158-300x202.png 300w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/image-158-768x517.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 906px) 100vw, 906px" /></figure>

<p>There are four kinds of actions. We can use them in any combination:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The rule can apply a dynamic boost to a specific field.</li>

<li>The rule can apply dynamic filtering to the results list.&nbsp;</li>

<li>The rule can remove the trigger phrase from the query and substitute a different phrase.</li>

<li>The rule can calculate a partial relevance score based on the value of a field.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Site Search &gt; Configurations &gt; Advanced Configurations &gt; Sorting</strong></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<p>Search environments often let us sort the search results in multiple ways (such as by relevance, ratings, price, or recency).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="351" src="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-21-1024x351.png" alt="" class="wp-image-20221" srcset="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-21-1024x351.png 1024w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-21-300x103.png 300w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-21-768x263.png 768w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-21.png 1198w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The SearchStax Site Search solution lets us take control of this feature and define the sort options offered by the current Search Profile.</p>

<p>Navigate to <strong>Site Search > Configurations > Advanced Configurations > Sorting</strong>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="911" height="608" src="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-24.png" alt="" class="wp-image-21549" srcset="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-24.png 911w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-24-300x200.png 300w, https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-24-768x513.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 911px) 100vw, 911px" /></figure>

<p>The <strong>checkbox</strong> on the left enables the sorting control. The <strong>Sort Field</strong> control lets you choose a field to sort by.</p>

<div class="wp-block-group"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained">
<p>Note the <strong>Reload Schema</strong> icon above the list of fields. If you can&#8217;t find a field in the list, try <a href="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/hc/schema-when-to-reload/">reloading the schema</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="200" height="103" src="https://demo.searchstax.com/docs/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-25.png" alt="" class="wp-image-21551"/></figure></div></div></div>

<div class="alert alert-info">
<h3>Not all fields may be used for sorting!</h3>
<p>Site Search automatically limits the Sort Fields on this screen to those that Solr accepts for sorting. Solr accepts any primitive field (numerics, string, boolean, dates, etc.) which has docValues=&#8221;true&#8221; (or multiValued=&#8221;false&#8221; and indexed=&#8221;true&#8221;). See Apache Solr&#8217;s <a href="https://solr.apache.org/guide/8_9/common-query-parameters.html#sort-parameter">Common Query Parameters</a> for more information. </p>
</div>

<p>The <strong>Sort Order</strong> control offers ascending or descending sort order. The <strong>Label</strong> is the text the user will see in the sorting droplist. Use the <strong>(+)</strong> button to add the field to the sorting list. The <strong>Preview</strong> field on the right shows what the sorting control will look like on the search page.</p>

<p>The list at the bottom of the screen reflects the sort options. Select an option and click the <strong>Move Up</strong> and <strong>Move Down</strong> buttons to control how the options will be ordered on the sorting control.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Click the <strong>Save Draft</strong> button before you leave or refresh a page. Otherwise, changes can be lost. The <strong>Publish</strong> button updates the search configuration to make the changes active.&nbsp;</p>
